(kkremitzki) @luzpaz I don't have access to the DNS controls for the freecadweb.org domain
2017-10-16 04:25:19
Evidlo
does freecad 0.17 support assemblies?
2017-10-16 06:13:00
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) @luzpaz, what’s up?
2017-10-16 08:43:25
duncan-nz
Drafting; how do i select a line that lies 'behind' another line?
2017-10-16 08:52:50
duncan-nz
sterna: Drafting: do you know how I select a line that lies 'behind' another line?
2017-10-16 08:53:17
duncan-nz
Hiding one line, making my change, finding and unhiding the line seems pretty clunky
2017-10-16 08:54:56
sterna
I don't knowe if there is a way to select objects that overlaps other objects
2017-10-16 08:55:21
sterna
I saw something a while ago that is was a feature either being considered or implement, but I don't remember
2017-10-16 09:05:21
duncan-nz
sterna: Thanks
2017-10-16 09:13:30
XXCoder
sterna: I remember one vector art program allowing me to select specific object if I shift-click. I wonder if same could be done for freecad
2017-10-16 09:34:18
duncan-nz
XXCoder: that doesn't seem to work here. Anyway it would only work for a situation with two lines. What I'd like is to be able to toggle through the 'layers'. AutoCAD and Revit from Autodesk use shift once an item is highlighted by hovering the mouse over it.
2017-10-16 09:34:41
XXCoder
duncan-nz: oh it wasnt existant feature, was wondering if it could be added
2017-10-16 09:35:26
XXCoder
this program shows a menu of all items that click could have hit and you could select one. pretty nice
2017-10-16 09:44:31
duncan-nz
XXCoder: I'm new in here and with FreeCAD. Did you trigger/send that message from FreeCAD_Git? Or did you try to post a link to the program shows a menu of all items that click could have hit and you could select one.?
2017-10-16 09:45:05
XXCoder
those freecad commits? nah its trigged by people sumitting new or modified source to freecad git
2017-10-16 09:45:22
XXCoder
you can see names of person who did it, in recent case wwmayer
2017-10-16 09:46:30
duncan-nz
it just looks like in your previous comment you were going to post a link to a program. I thought it might be some extension or something
2017-10-16 09:47:33
XXCoder
ahh yeah I wasnt clear, I was reffering to other program that had the feature I was wondering about
2017-10-16 09:47:48
XXCoder
freecad itself sadly does not
2017-10-16 09:48:10
XXCoder
but no worries its still quite early at 0.17 and as you see its heavily worked on.
2017-10-16 09:48:14
duncan-nz
ok. Yeah it must be a struggle deciding how/if to add features to FreeCad
2017-10-16 09:48:46
duncan-nz
... 0.17 it is a bit of a bummer when it crashes ... must get back into the habbit of saving often.
2017-10-16 09:49:07
XXCoder
I dont recommand 0.17 yet, 0.16 works very well
2017-10-16 09:49:30
XXCoder
and there is ponental of file format changes in 0.17
2017-10-16 09:50:03
duncan-nz
Two others I'd like are 'match properties' which takes the (non geometric) properties from one object and pastes them to another.
2017-10-16 09:50:52
XXCoder
example of properity?
2017-10-16 09:50:55
duncan-nz
I've just checked and can see I am running 0,15 in Kubuntu.
2017-10-16 09:51:38
XXCoder
0.15 is quite unstable, I recommand adding repo so you can get 0.16
2017-10-16 09:51:45
XXCoder
in least its noit 0.13
2017-10-16 09:51:56
duncan-nz
I'm in Drafting, so properties like color, thickness, and so on. In Draft it would be pretty much everything excet the geometric properties.
2017-10-16 09:51:59
XXCoder
disto I used come with 0.13 lol
2017-10-16 09:52:10
XXCoder
ahh cool. never used draft myself
2017-10-16 09:52:14
duncan-nz
Do you have a repo in mind?
2017-10-16 09:52:23
XXCoder
lemme find it a second
2017-10-16 09:53:02
XXCoder
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/freecad-maintainers/freecad-stable/ubuntu trusty main
2017-10-16 09:53:13
XXCoder
you have to modify trusty part to match whatever you have
2017-10-16 09:53:29
duncan-nz
I'm starting gently in FreeCAD. I use Revit at work: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autodesk_Revit
2017-10-16 09:53:38
XXCoder
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/freecad-maintainers/freecad-daily/ubuntu trusty main
2017-10-16 09:53:57
XXCoder
daily, gets 0.16 updates that might be unstable (not likely) and unstable 0.17
2017-10-16 09:54:19
XXCoder
fancy
2017-10-16 09:55:25
XXCoder
0.17 cam is being worked on and I look forward to that but it will be pretty while to get 0.17 to stable.
2017-10-16 09:56:56
duncan-nz
I haven't added repos this way before, do you know what I should write in 'distribution' and 'section'?
2017-10-16 09:57:45
duncan-nz
(I'll start looking it up)
2017-10-16 09:59:17
XXCoder
are you using sypantic or?
2017-10-16 09:59:42
duncan-nz
yeah, synaptic (kubuntu built in is crap imho)
2017-10-16 10:00:54
XXCoder
cool lemme see mine
2017-10-16 10:01:08
XXCoder
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wa4vXBakFs enjoy while I look up lol
2017-10-16 10:01:35
duncan-nz
(got the PPA added)
2017-10-16 10:01:52
XXCoder
should be ok
2017-10-16 10:02:09
XXCoder
maybe need to add key but dunno on tjhat, been too long since I last added ppa lol
2017-10-16 10:02:14
duncan-nz
(it's described for cl at https://launchpad.net/~freecad-maintainers/+archive/ubuntu/freecad-stable)
2017-10-16 10:03:03
duncan-nz
Nah, that PPA still offers 0.15
2017-10-16 10:03:19
XXCoder
maybe add daily one
2017-10-16 10:03:36
XXCoder
or did you refresh?
2017-10-16 10:06:18
duncan-nz
(something wrong at my end ...)
2017-10-16 10:46:51
duncan-nz
Wow! That took a while. Something was wrong with my sources.list file. Rebuilt a new sources.list and now I'm offered freecad 0.16
2017-10-16 10:47:02
XXCoder
nice :)
2017-10-16 10:49:31
duncan-nz
Nice list of changes in the changelog! On eof which I've been missing.
2017-10-16 10:49:48
duncan-nz
Thanks for pushing me in the right direction. Now to see if it's more stable...
2017-10-16 10:50:05
XXCoder
it should be
2017-10-16 10:50:21
XXCoder
0.15 is pretty old, 0.16 have been out for what? few years?
2017-10-16 10:50:48
duncan-nz
18. April, 2016
2017-10-16 10:51:41
duncan-nz
I'm so glad to finally be using FreeCAD. It'll be fun learning the different modules in the years to come.
2017-10-16 10:52:00
XXCoder
couple isnt really ready in 0.16, assembly and path
2017-10-16 10:52:06
XXCoder
rest should be pretty good.
2017-10-16 10:52:25
XXCoder
it does have FEM but I havent tried it too much
2017-10-16 10:53:26
XXCoder
0.17 is very different on Path so I am not bothering to learn 0.16 Path
2017-10-16 10:58:38
duncan-nz
I'm guessing I'll be using Draft and Arch workbenches. Hopefully I can bring some experience to UI and functions to them.
2017-10-16 10:59:17
XXCoder
virtually all my use is at Part and Sketch
2017-10-16 10:59:39
duncan-nz
But FEM would be cool, and when I have time one of them must be perfect for making STL files for 3d printers.
2017-10-16 11:00:44
XXCoder
nice. yeah 3d printer is why I use freecad though I want to use it for CAM someday (Path workspace)
2017-10-16 11:00:44
duncan-nz
You mean 'sketcher' right? how's that different form Draft?
2017-10-16 11:01:03
XXCoder
its not quite workspace on its own, its part of Part
2017-10-16 11:01:26
duncan-nz
oh, for skecthing paths for extrusion and sweep, etc?
2017-10-16 11:01:39
XXCoder
draft and sketch is very similiar from what I see though I didnt use draft so I may be wrong
2017-10-16 11:01:48
XXCoder
or holes yeah
2017-10-16 11:02:07
XXCoder
you have to design a nicely constranted shape or shapes and use it
2017-10-16 15:31:18
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) @bblacey can you weigh in on the discussion of generating a github `repo_public` token that will be hidden in TravisCI in order for a script to use the GitHub API to report results back to a PR comment thread? See #1039
2017-10-16 16:35:38
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) We already have one that we use - just reference `${GH_TOKEN}`. It is defined at the repo level so it is secure and hidden.
2017-10-16 19:00:00
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) @bblacey i did, it doesn't work. https://travis-ci.org/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/jobs/288680923#L1025-L1051
2017-10-16 19:00:47
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) @bblacey according to what I've read GH_TOKEN is only viable for deploying
2017-10-16 19:02:26
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) [This is the portion in the script](https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/pull/1039/files#diff-acc4bad51037529bc37dd289e24d10caR59) that calls ${GH_TOKEN}
2017-10-16 19:03:02
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) @luzpaz - yes, I am sorry. After I posted, I read #1039 and @peterlama was spot on - the GH_TOKEN is a secure environment variable and Travis CI doesn’t allow them for pull requests unless the pull request originates from the same repo - https://docs.travis-ci.com/user/pull-requests/#Pull-Requests-and-Security-Restrictions
2017-10-16 19:03:47
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) So essentially the PR needs to be merged for it to work ?
2017-10-16 19:04:04
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) That said, I looked to see if we can define an OAUTH token that is restricted to updating PR comments only but I didn’t find anything during my first pass.
2017-10-16 19:04:21
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) If the goal is to run for every PR, we need to find another solution.
2017-10-16 19:04:44
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) > If the goal is to run for every PR, we need to find another solution.
2017-10-16 19:04:50
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) why?
2017-10-16 19:05:03
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) Even if we used a clear-text OAUTH token, it increases the risk of spammers.
2017-10-16 19:05:38
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) Because the spell check would only run for CI builds on FreeCAD/FreeCAD master, not on PRs the originate from forked repos.
2017-10-16 19:08:35
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) Do you understand? We can’t update the comments on the PR thread without and valid credentials. An OAUTH token (credentials) must be protected. Therefore, the token is passed to the Travis CI jobs as a secure environment variable. Travis for security reasons, will not allow a secure environment variable in pull requests unless they are from the same repo (see earlier link). So the only solution is to either find a different feedbac
2017-10-16 19:08:35
FreeCADBot2
if we can create a restricted credential that we don’t mind sharing with the world because it would appear in the log of every Travis job.
2017-10-16 19:09:50
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) I haven’t found a way to create an OAUTH token that can only update PR comments. Even if I did, we would want others to weigh in on their view of the security/abuse risk.
2017-10-16 19:10:15
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) how do 3rd party apps do it then without compromising security ?
2017-10-16 19:11:12
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) Ah, they do it with authorized webhooks. Actually @kkremitzki could probably help with something like because he has been managing some servers that @vejmarie donated to the project.
2017-10-16 19:12:38
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) oh yea.. the webhook thing. I remember we ended up at a dead end with that due to lack of access to freecadweb.org backend
2017-10-16 19:13:39
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) Yeah but I recall that @kkremitzki or someone started some work on hooking PRs, I thought for Mantis integration? I can’t remember but I think @kkremitzki could be pretty resourceful here in coming up with a solution.
2017-10-16 19:14:37
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) @bblacey thanks for your feedback...much appreciated.
2017-10-16 19:15:06
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) @luzpaz - wish I could have been more helpful in forging a solution. I think @kkremitzki can get you there faster ;)
2017-10-16 19:15:41
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) :+1:
2017-10-16 19:19:12
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) The general idea would be that a webhook request would be triggered for the PR (akin to what happens for Travis-CI and AppVeyor) on a server the Kurt would configure. The webhook would trigger/perform the spell check. Once the spell check completes, it would update the PR using an OAUTH token secured on the remote FreeCAD server.
2017-10-16 19:20:15
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) Here is a CI server example akin to what you want to do - https://developer.github.com/v3/guides/building-a-ci-server/
2017-10-16 19:21:17
FreeCADBot2
(bblacey) I think it would be pretty easy to do what you want to do but we need @kkremitzki
2017-10-16 19:22:12
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) awesome, thanks @bblacey for the encouragement
2017-10-16 20:01:07
Gegsite
is there a patreon page for Freecad ?
2017-10-16 20:01:31
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) It's not for FreeCAD itself but one of the main developers: https://www.patreon.com/yorikvanhavre
2017-10-16 20:01:55
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) beat me to it
2017-10-16 20:02:22
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) @luzpaz I read the conversation, I wonder if this is something that could be handled via buildbot, if you recall I set up a buildbot server at build.freecad.io that I never completed... but that would be a good way of handling the secrets stored in an environment variable
2017-10-16 20:02:35
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) Also, if you wanted regarding the crowdin thing we could set up translate.freecad.io for thta
2017-10-16 20:02:50
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) yes please x2
2017-10-16 20:03:43
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) I saw the mantisbt upgrade as well, I am going to try to do the upgrade this afternoon
2017-10-16 20:07:59
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) I found an interesting software called GNU MediaGoblin recently, it is sorta like an open source flickr/youtube/etc that serves generic media types in various formats like galleries. It also supports STL files with an in-browser 3d viewer, and I was thinking it might be useful to set up some sort of "model showcase" for FreeCAD
2017-10-16 20:09:08
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) cool, I remember mediagoblin from when they raised money via some sort of open source kickstarter
2017-10-16 20:09:16
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) cool idea!
2017-10-16 20:09:38
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) Some of the stuff the Open Source Ecology people are putting together is pretty nice looking
2017-10-16 20:10:03
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) yea! i know.. they are working on an OSE workbench
2017-10-16 20:12:03
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) They want to embed a chat window to advance their collaboration efforts
2017-10-16 20:12:22
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) Hmm, like live-chat? Or something where a file has associated comments
2017-10-16 20:12:29
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) live-chat
2017-10-16 20:12:35
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) (looking for the page)
2017-10-16 20:13:11
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) It certainly seems possible but I'm not sure why a separate chat client wouldnt be enough
2017-10-16 20:13:37
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) i think they want to onboard it so it's all in one place
2017-10-16 20:13:57
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) If they can integrate it into the workbench that would be neat

Hello.
2017-10-16 20:15:35
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) otwieracz: Hello
2017-10-16 20:16:00
otwieracz
As a total FreeCAD newbie - I've created a sketch and I'd like to extrude (pad) it.
2017-10-16 20:16:17
otwieracz
However, this means that „top” and „bottom” will be the same.
2017-10-16 20:16:43
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) @kkremitzki should I for now close #1039 ?
2017-10-16 20:17:02
otwieracz
Where I'd like for example one diameter to be different on the top of model.
2017-10-16 20:17:18
otwieracz
So this will be conic-like shape in case of cylinder.
2017-10-16 20:17:47
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) otwieracz: You could use a loft to a 2nd sketch
2017-10-16 20:18:16
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) @luzpaz Probably, it may take a bit to get things working
2017-10-16 20:19:25
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) @kkremitzki is there a branch on your personal FC repo that I can send it as a PR to ?
2017-10-16 20:19:34
otwieracz
kkremitzki, do you suggest any docs about it?
2017-10-16 20:20:53

(kkremitzki) otwieracz: https://freecadweb.org/wiki/Part_Loft
2017-10-16 20:22:07

(kkremitzki) @luzpaz Hmm not sure
2017-10-16 20:23:40
otwieracz
kkremitzki, thank you!
2017-10-16 20:27:08
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) @kkremitzki ok.. then here is the branch for future reference: https://github.com/luzpaz/FreeCAD/tree/codespell-travis-check
2017-10-16 20:32:09

„The sketch must contain only one open or closed wire or line (can be multiple lines, if those lines are all connected as they are then a single wire)” - probably that's it
2017-10-16 20:50:01
FreeCADBot2
(luzpaz) @kkremitzki let me know how i can help with the buildbot project
2017-10-16 22:52:00
Weasel_
I'm trying to make a pipe thread by sweeping a sketch of thread profile around helix with diameter of thread minor diameter and cut it out of the pipe but get strange results: http://i.imgur.com/C8LKze4.png http://i.imgur.com/zB19Vi3.png . Am I doing something wrong?
2017-10-16 23:03:58
archivist
pipe thread is usually tapered
2017-10-16 23:05:40
Weasel_
It sure is, but cutting parallel properly would be my first priority
2017-10-16 23:07:21
Weasel_
Cut somehow just breaks the pipe
2017-10-16 23:08:02
archivist
looks like your dimensions are out somewhere
2017-10-16 23:10:08
Weasel_
Can't FreeCAD handle cutting shallow like this?
2017-10-16 23:10:43
FreeCADBot2
(kkremitzki) Weasel you might want to post on the forum, I have seen some discussions on the topic of making threads there
2017-10-16 23:12:27
archivist
think about pitch/resolution etc need the right values, do it like the real thing and start with larger stock
2017-10-16 23:22:10
Weasel_
When doing tapered threads there still always are shallow cuts towards center of the pipe. If I make deeper cut threads look fine, but when cut at middle of the pipe result is this: http://i.imgur.com/4ghrrvy.png

(kkremitzki) @luzpaz How familiar are you with setting up VMs? One of the first steps would be to get an Ubuntu 16.04 server VM set up and then go through https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-buildbot-on-ubuntu-16-04 to get a local testing environment if you are able to

I made some progress with tapered pipe thread, cut 75% of thread profile sweeped around helix with angle which works fine, but when cutting remaining thread face using loft I encounter similar problem than in earlier attempts: http://i.imgur.com/pSwPksT.png

Strange, playing around with transition property of the sweep after making all the cuts and getting invalid solid suddenly makes it repair itself: http://i.imgur.com/NBcCgaY.png

If I want to recompile freecad after a "git pull" do I need to run "cmake -DFREECAD_USE_EXTERNAL_PIVY=1 -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release" again or can I just 'make'?
2017-10-17 19:23:37
mlampert
just make should do the trick

np - if you're starting to compile from source quite a bit you might wanna install ccache

kion
mlampert, what does ccache does?
2017-10-17 19:26:39
kion
yes, I'm using Debian Stretch and pretty much doing daily compiles
2017-10-17 19:27:05
mlampert
it keeps track of what you've compiled previously and if ith's the same it just copies over the object file

kion
fantastic!
2017-10-17 19:27:16
mlampert
you definitely want to install ccache

Hi there. Anyone around? So i'm trying to work out how to use consistent colors in the Drafting Workbench according to what I'm drawing. So for wooden panels I want to draw them light brown, insulation yellow, wood framing green and so on. But I seem to have to manually switch the color for each line before I draw it.
